UPDATED 10/1/2024: I am sick and tired of the “FREEZE STREAK.” I want to earn my streak the legitimate way. I don’t want to miss a day or 4 and be allowed to claim that I still have a streak. You guys are giving in to this culture of people who want satisfaction of achievement without earning it. Simply just make a quick little feature to turn off the streak, the same way I can turn on the unlimited mistakes in a lesson. It’s that FREAKING easy. I have sent emails, all ignored, regarding this issue. How hard is it to turn the streak off if I choose to? However, I have lost faith in the fact that you will add this feature. I am now giving you a rating of 4. The freeze streak feature has turned me away from using the app and now I don’t think this app can teach me a language as effectively as it should. Matter of fact, I’ve been at this for 3 years and have not even gotten close to learning as much as you claim people learn. THIS APP DOES NOT FAST TRACK YOU TO LEARNING A NEW LANGUAGE. I have now paid more than I would have for Rosetta Stone and Babble and I am not even 1/4 of the way to learning a language. I am about to bring a lawsuit false advertising. I stopped recommending your app to people. SAVE YOUR MONEY OR GET THE FREE VERSION! Don’t use this app. It does not teach you as much as it claims it will!!!! I have been a member since September of 2021. I started with the free version and thought it was good enough to pay for the membership. I was spending an hour sometimes more a day. I enjoyed it so much that after a month of using it, I purchased the family version so that my whole family could use it. In the beginning, if you got something wrong, you could see why you were wrong. They had an explanation for it and people would be able to comment on the explanation. That really helped to understand a lot. I enjoyed it so much and used it daily. I had a streak of 215+ days using it. That streak kept me coming back, even if it was for 1 lesson. The membership began to increase from $99/yr. To $119/yr. It didn’t really bother me and felt the app was worth it. However, about a year ago, they changed the format. They added a “freeze your streak” feature which allows you to keep your streak going even if you miss a couple of days. This feature totally takes away from the genuity. I can miss days and still have a streak?? That actually demotivated me. Now when I miss a day, I have to wait about 7 days before starting up again because I don’t like claiming to have a continuous streak when I really don’t. I have sent multiple emails through “Help Center” to ask how I can remove the “freeze your streak” feature, and all have been ignored. It is as if there is no help center or customer service whatsoever. Also, when they upgraded the app, they took away the “explain the answer” feature. Well not completely, they rebranded it as an extra feature that you have to pay more for. I think they call it “Duolingo Max” which is an additional $60/yr., bringing it to a total $179/yr. for the family plan. I tried it on a “free trial” and it was not the same and don’t think it was as good as it was when it was free. This app is great, but they need the features to be more customizable. They say that keeping a streak has been proven to be more motivating, but for honest people who do not accept achievements they didn’t earn, the “freeze your streak” option is a disaster. It takes away from how much I use the app because I have to wait almost 7 days to return. The “freeze your streak” is automatic. There is no way it will not allow me to not use it. ALLOW US TO TURN THE “FREEZE YOUR STREAK” FEATURE OFF THE SAME WAY YOU ALLOW ME TO TURN ON OR OFF THE “UNLIMITED HEARTS” FEATURE. ALSO, RESPOND TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE SENT EMAILS!

Duolingo is the best for me for learning different languages like Russian Ukraine and German to speak to my friends and I can also have learn it too thank you Duolingo

At first, you get a little bit upset because there is so much repetition, but it really is the only way to have a language embedded in your mind. I am super excited. I plan to put this to good use when I go to Paris in the spring! Thank you, Duolingo!

So many interruptions and games and ads and I paid 83 dollars! And I can never speak to anyone to ask for help.

All of the sudden my infinite hearts disappeared the other day. I’m in a classroom and I’ve always been able to have unlimited hearts when I’ve been in a class. Now there’s only 5 hearts AND ads????? It really interrupts learning :(

I’ve learned a lot and enjoyed the app, but now I’m spending more times stuck in ads than in lessons and that isn’t good for learning. Learning needs to be uninterrupted and focused but having loud ads about games is just terrible. Duolingo used to be about learning and providing for everyone. Now it’s just another money grab. This used to be a good app to supplement your language learning path, but I can no longer recommend this to anyone that can’t buy the premium and even that isn’t worth it when there are better programs to spend your money on.

I’m a long long time user. If you miss your streak because you have a life, you can spend gems to buy a streak freeze. Sometimes I actually do more lessons because I wanna gain more gems to store up. But every few months they change the way that you earn gems until eventually you just do one lesson a day because nothing actually earns you gems or you have to do way too much to earn gems and so the risk of time to the reward of gems is just too low to worry about. Probably because they want you to buy their gyms packs where in the old days you could earn gems at least a little every day. Right now, even doing the first two tiers of your daily challenges earns no gems. And the third tier I’ve only seen our gems one time. So it’s not worth spending 10 to 15+ minutes a day hoping to get gems. I hate rewards that are random. I’d rather know what I’m going to get. Even if the amount changes at least explain what the reward will be.

I really like this app because it helps with language but I wish it would just give us hearts and we don’t have to watch ads because it says it doesn’t have ads but it does .
